College Prep Plan: Sophomore Year

Your sophomore year in high school is about keeping up the momentum academically. While there is still a lot left to do, this year you will start narrowing down your college research. Follow the College Prep Plan below to stay on the right path.

Fall

Schedule a meeting with your college counselor as soon as possible and discuss the following:

  • Gather any updated information and resources available for your college preparation and planning
  • Review and adjust your Four-Year Course Plan
  • Review progress on researching careers, majors, and colleges
  • Test preparation and registration for:
    • PSAT 10
    • SAT Subject Tests™

Work on the following tasks throughout the year:

  • Continue involvement in extracurricular activities
  • Search for scholarships you can apply for now and over the next two years
  • Continue researching careers, majors, and colleges
    • Start building a list of prospective colleges
  • Continue adding to your 'brag file'
  • Start visiting colleges and universities you are genuinely interested in
  • Attend as many college fairs, events, and information sessions you can

Spring

Schedule a meeting with your college counselor as soon as possible and discuss the following:

  • Picking junior year courses based off your Four-Year Course Plan
  • How to take advantage of the upcoming summer:
    • Summer school to get ahead or catch up
    • Enrichment programs, workshops, and camps that may interest you
    • Getting more out of your extracurricular activities (i.e., leadership, starting your own activity/event, etc.)
    • Other summer options, focuses, and tasks
